Descasque e fatie as cebolas em julienne.

Numa panela média, leve a manteiga para derreter em fogo médio. Acrescente as cebolas e tempere com uma pitada de sal. Deixe cozinhar, mexendo de vez em quando, por cerca de 30 minutos, até ficarem bem macias e douradas. Esta é uma etapa que não dá para ter preguiça; se as cebolas não caramelizarem, a sopa não fica gostosa.

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and season with a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes, until very soft and golden. This is a step you can't be lazy about; if the onions don't caramelize, the soup doesn't taste good.

Junte o vinho e misture, raspando o fundo da panela para deslacrar, até evaporar.

Add the wine and mix, scraping the bottom of the pan to unseal, until it evaporates.

Junte o caldo. Assim que ferver, abaixe o fogo e deixe cozinhar por 30 minutos, mexendo de vez em quando para não grudar no fundo. 

Add the broth. Once it boils, lower the heat and let it cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally so it doesn't stick to the bottom.

Enquanto isso, preaqueça o forno a 200 ºC (temperatura média). 

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200°C (medium temperature).

Aqueça uma frigideira em fogo médio e toste apenas um lado dos pães por cerca de 2 minutos (opcional) 

Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast just one side of the buns for about 2 minutes (optional)

Após os 30 minutos, desligue o fogo e ajuste o sal e pimenta do reino. 

After 30 minutes, turn off the heat and adjust the salt and pepper.

Transfira a sopa para um refratário ou panela que possa ir ao forno. 

Transfer the soup to an ovenproof dish or pan.

Disponha as fatias de pão italiano, uma ao lado da outra, com a parte tostada para baixo, assim elas absorvem menos líquido e não desmancham. 
Polvilhe com o queijo ralado e leve ao forno.


Arrange the slices of Italian bread, one next to the other, with the toasted side down, so they absorb less liquid and don't fall apart.
Sprinkle with grated cheese and place in the oven.


Deixe por cerca de 10 minutos para gratinar. Se o seu forno tiver a opção grill pode usar, mas fique de olho para não queimar! 
O queijo pode levar menos tempo para derreter. 

Leave for about 10 minutes to brown. If your oven has the grill option, you can use it, but keep an eye out so it doesn't burn!
Cheese may take less time to melt.

Com cuidado, retire a panela do forno e sirva a sopa imediatamente.

Carefully remove the pan from the oven and serve the soup immediately.
